Judy Brown-Beresford: ABC radio newsreader

Wednesday 16 June, 2010 - 15:15 by John_W_Barnes in People

views (244)

Judy Brown-Beresford (also known as Judy Beresford)
was a well recognized voice on ABC radio (in Queensland)
 in the 1970's & 1980's.
She was an ABC newsreader on the 'old' Radio National
(when the 4QR programme was relayed  to regional centres,
and 4QG was the local Brisbane station).
The transmitter site is located at Bald Hills (now operated
by Broadcast Australia) and the large antenna (650 feet
high) is a well known landmark in the area. It transmits
the two AM stations from the same tower.
Besides being a newsreader, Judy Beresford also
presented a number of programs on ABC radio,
including "Statewide" on 4QR in 1987. She also
presented a music program titled "And the Beat Goes On".
Judy was born in Rockhampton in November, 1947,
and before going to the ABC she was involved with
Brisbane radio stations 4BH and 4BK.
After her retirement, she came back to read the
weekend ABC TV news for a short period.
She died last December (Dec. 2009) of
ovarian cancer, and was last seen on TV on
Australian Story which aired recently on the ABC.
Judy Brown-Beresford was only 62 when she
passed away. She had never married.
Approximately 800 Australian women die of
ovarian cancer every year.
The picture below shows Judy Beresford in
the late 1980's.

Large alarm clock, quartz 'retro' style, 210mm diameter.

Thursday 06 May, 2010 - 19:52 by John_W_Barnes in Default

views (347)

This large 'retro' alarm clock with twin bells is 210mm in diameter (8.5 inches).

It was purchased for $25, and at that price, it was probably made in China. It keeps good time, and is powered by two "C" size batteries. The alarm is reasonably loud, and makes a sound like an old fashioned burglar alarm.

The body is made from imitation stainless steel, but the bells are made from genuine steel. The alarm is set by moving the fourth hand to the desired time. An on/off switch at the rear prevents the alarm operating.

To keep costs down, the no-name alarm comes without a box or instruction leaflet (both of which are really not necessary).

Rachel Amy Church - born at Pleasant Creek,Victoria, in 1863.

Thursday 08 April, 2010 - 19:34 by John_W_Barnes in People

views (197)

Rachel Amy Church was born at Pleasant Creek, Victoria, (now Stawell), on Jan 8, 1863 - [registration number 4068].

She was the second child of William Elias Church and Mary *Ellen Church (formerly Mary Ellen Wilde).

*Ellen is written in some records as "Helen".

The Churches had a total of 8 children born between 1860 and 1873 - 3 boys and 5 girls.  At the time Rachel was born, Pleasant Creek was a gold mining area. Rachel went on to marry a goldminer, Samuel Pollard (born in Keilduff, Ireland, in 1848).

Samuel Pollard and Rachel Amy Church were married in Charters Towers in 1880, which, by then, was a major gold mining area in north Queensland.

They had a total of 8 children, including James Eramus Pollard - born in Ravenswood in 1886, and died in an explosion in the Bonnie Doon gold mine, near Charters Towers in 1937.

No photos of Rachel Amy Pollard (Church) could be found. (Rachel Church was the mother of my mother's father).

Dark energy and the recycling of the universe.

Wednesday 23 September, 2009 - 09:45 by John_W_Barnes in Default

views (100)

Not too many years ago, scientists were unsure whether the universe
would continue to expand, or whether the rate of expansion
would eventually stop and go into reverse, resulting in a 'big crunch'.
Recent research has shown that the rate of expansion is actually
INCREASING , and this means that the universe will continue to expand
until it reaches a point where it will 'tear itself apart'.
Not only galaxies and planets will be torn apart, but so too will all
matter, including all life forms.
Molecules will be reduced to individual atoms, atoms will be reduced
to particles, and the particles will eventually revert back to the "dark
energy" from whence they emerged, leaving only a cold dark void.
The universe will have passed away, and all matter will have disappeared.
However, the outlook is not depressingly hopeless. Matter has NOT been totally
destroyed !
We know from the basic laws of physics that matter cannot be created or
destroyed - it can only be changed from one form into another.
It may be many millions of years, but a point will be reached where
the invisible "dark energy" will start to convert itself into fundamental
particles, and this in turn will eventually result in another 'big bang', bringing
about the birth of a new (but different) expanding universe, which, in turn,
will be 'torn to pieces' by its own expansion.
Thus, the cycle of birth and death of the universe will continue indefinitely.
How many universes have there been ? This is something we will never know
We would have to rely on records for the answer, and as ALL matter is converted
into energy at the end of each cycle, there would be nowhere in the universe where
we could safely store records which would survive into the next universe.
The only thing we can say with any certainty is that that each new universe would
be governed by the universal laws of physics, and the process would continue
indefinitely, regardless of the emergence of new life forms in any given cycle.
