Dark energy and the recycling of the universe.

Wednesday 23 September, 2009 - 09:45 by John_W_Barnes in Default

views (48)

Not too many years ago, scientists were unsure whether the universe
would continue to expand, or whether the rate of expansion
would eventually stop and go into reverse, resulting in a 'big crunch'.
Recent research has shown that the rate of expansion is actually
INCREASING , and this means that the universe will continue to expand
until it reaches a point where it will 'tear itself apart'.
Not only galaxies and planets will be torn apart, but so too will all
matter, including all life forms.
Molecules will be reduced to individual atoms, atoms will be reduced
to particles, and the particles will eventually revert back to the "dark
energy" from whence they emerged, leaving only a cold dark void.
The universe will have passed away, and all matter will have disappeared.
However, the outlook is not depressingly hopeless. Matter has NOT been totally
destroyed !
We know from the basic laws of physics that matter cannot be created or
destroyed - it can only be changed from one form into another.
It may be many millions of years, but a point will be reached where
the invisible "dark energy" will start to convert itself into fundamental
particles, and this in turn will eventually result in another 'big bang', bringing
about the birth of a new (but different) expanding universe, which, in turn,
will be 'torn to pieces' by its own expansion.
Thus, the cycle of birth and death of the universe will continue indefinitely.
How many universes have there been ? This is something we will never know
We would have to rely on records for the answer, and as ALL matter is converted
into energy at the end of each cycle, there would be nowhere in the universe where
we could safely store records which would survive into the next universe.
The only thing we can say with any certainty is that that each new universe would
be governed by the universal laws of physics, and the process would continue
indefinitely, regardless of the emergence of new life forms in any given cycle.

Picture of a Claret Ash in Autumn.

Picture No.23 in the Photo Gallery shows my
Claret Ash in Autumn ( Fall).
The picture shows why it is called a "claret"
ash (due to the deep claret colour).
The Claret Ash was planted (by me) in
1976, and is now about 40-50 feet tall .
It's deciduous, and provides excellent
shade during the Summer .

PMG Radio Technician John Morehead at Mandorah, 1968

This photo of PMG Radio Technician John Moorehead
was taken as he was walking off the Mandorah Jetty
at Cox Peninsula in 1968.
He is carrying a piece of radio equipment for the
(now defunct) Radio Australia Receiver Site.
The sign in the background says "Unauthorised use
of this jetty prohibited".
The jetty at that time was the property of the
Commonwealth Government, under the
administration of the Postmaster General's
Department (PMG) who operated the Radio
Australia transmitting and receiving sites on
Cox Peninsula.

(In 2000, the Transmitter Site was sold to

CTC7 & ABC3 TV antennas on Black Mountain, 1974.

Photo No.20 in the Photo Gallery was taken in 1974,
and shows the CTC7 & ABC3 television masts on top
of Black Mountain in Canberra.
This was before the Black Mountain Tower was built.
Construction on the tower began in 1975, and it was
officially opened in 1980.
The first ABC television transmission from the tower
took place in 1977.
Back in 1974, CTC7 was a self contained station,
with studios and transmitter on Black Mountain.
(The studios were later relocated in Watson).
The television studios for ABC3 , were located in
Northbourne Avenue, and the programme was
fed up to the transmitter site via coaxial cable.

PMG bus for transport at Radio Australia, Cox Peninsula

Quote on John20747's Place

PMG bus for transport at Radio Australia, Cox Peninsula
Picture 18 in the Photo Gallery, taken in 1969,
shows the silver bus that transported PMG
day-shift staff from the Cox Peninsula
Transmitter Site to the Mandorah
Jetty (and vice versa).
The bus travelled directly between the
Mandorah Jetty and the Transmitter
Site, and did not provide transport for
the small number of staff at the
Receiver Site.
Both sites were staffed by employees
of the former Postmaster General's
Department (PMG), which owned and
operated the Radio Australia facilities.
The bus is seen travelling along Charles
Point Road.
